We’re in the dog days of summer in Kansas City and just like previous years, we’re seeing more sun and heat while not a whole lot of rain which means you probably need to be watering your lawn. First of all when you water your lawn is extremely important in the summertime because some times of the day will be more effective for your grass. Ideally it’s best to water early in the morning when the sun can’t evaporate the water and it has ample time to be absorbed into the soil. Watering your lawn in the middle of the day is a waste of water as most if not all of it will evaporate and never reach your grass’ roots. Late afternoon is another option but not the best in that any water left standing overnight can aid in fungus growth which becomes another lawn care headache in and of itself. Second, make sure that your lawn actually needs watering. A simple, easy way to do this is to use your finger to see if the soil a few inches down is dry. Most soil surface will likely be dry especially when we’ve seen little rain like the past few weeks in Kansas City but you may be surprised to find that the soil remains moist an inch or two below the surface. Thirdly make sure you are watering deeply towards the roots as that is where your grass absorbs the water. When soil is dry from lack of rain or watering, start off slow and allow the water to be absorbed otherwise you’ll end up with puddling which is what you don’t want. Over time the soil will begin to absorb water more quickly allowing you to water your lawn more deeply and less frequently.
