Fall brings about a unique time for lawns as the air is cool, there is abundant rain (usually), and the sun is still out enough to get new grass seeds to grow. But many lawns need more than just a few handfuls of seeds spread as the soil may have become compacted over the course of spring and summer or a thick impenetrable layer of thatch has developed with will ultimately suffocate lawns at the roots. Before adding new grass seed in the fall, many lawns need aerating which will remove small soil cores from the lawn to allow air, water, and nutrients to get to the roots and fall is when lawns need these the most to prepare for the winter months. When a layer of dead grass blades is present and effecting the health of a lawn, verticutting becomes necessary and is a much more aggressive means of removing layer of thatch so that water, air, nutrients and new grass seed have a more likely chance of surviving winter.
