How Does The Farmers Almanac Predict Weather?

Every season, particularly as winter approaches, we at SK Lawn and Landscape look for predictions about how much cold, snow and when both will be gone and when spring will arrive so that we can get started on providing lawn care, landscaping and hardscaping services in the Kansas City area. We use a variety of resources including national weather experts, local meteorologists, computer generated weather models, the Weather Channel, and last but not least the Farmers Almanac which has oddly been the go-to weather predictor in the United States for over 200 years.

Interestingly enough the Farmers Almanac has been around since 1818 and was originally somewhat of a variety show in print from meaning that it not only included weather predictions but also poetry, humor, gardening tips, articles on fishing and hunting, and other useful information that an actual farmer in the 1800’s might use. It has been published once per year since its inception in 1818 and has made its way to being one of the most reported weather predictors in not the United States but also in Canada and other countries as well. But how do they actually predict weather and how accurate are their predictions? That’s where it gets a little murky as the Farmers Almanac has always stated that they use “exclusive mathematical and astronomical formula, that relies on sunspot activity, tidal action, planetary position (astrology) and many other factors” and the identity of the forecasting is known as Caleb Weatherbee, a fake name so that, according to the publishers, the actual person is not “badgered.”

As far as the Farmer’s Almanac’s accuracy at predicting weather, they claim they are correct 80%-85% of the time since since 1818 and they prominently depict specific weather events that they accurately predicted in previous years on their website. However scientific analysis has shown that the Farmers Almanac is correct around 50% of the time meaning they are just as accurate as Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day predicting when spring will arrive each year which is purely chance. Regardless of their prediction methods or accuracy, the Farmers Almanac is an American staple and continues to be published both in print form and online each year with website visitors and readers in the millions. We at SK Lawn and Landscape will never claim to be able to accurately predict the weather in the Kansas City area but we can say that we will always be ready to deal with whatever the elements deliver by providing the metro’s most quality, professional lawn care, landscaping, and hardscaping services.
