When should you start spring lawn care in Kansas City?
The Midwest is a tricky area of the country in that sometimes the seasons don’t exactly line up with the calendar. Generally, in late February or early March is when the grass on any given lawn will start showing signs of life but it can be later depending on how long winter lingers. Spring lawn care oddly enough should actually start in the fall with a round of fertilizer and seeding but it can be done in the spring as well provided the air is cool, the sun is abundant, and there is adequate moisture. Once grass starts growing, it’s best to wait until it reaches at least 3 inches tall before mowing and keeping the grass length at around 2 inches will make it not only look its best but also keep it healthy. Mowing your lawn too short will make it more difficult to grow especially when winter and spring tend to go back and forth in the Kansas City area which can weaken and even kill grass before it gains enough strength. Just as the grass begins to grow, so too do weeds and other noxious plants which means that a “weed and feed” application is recommended near the end of March or early April. “Weed and feed” does 2 things for your lawn: 1) it kills weeds like dandelions that can easily take over lawns and 2) it fertilizes and strengthens existing and emerging grass giving it the boost that it needs to grow thick and strong in the spring where conditions are ideal for optimal growth.
