It’s hard not to be distracted by all of the buzz and hype for the BIG GAME especially when Kansas City will be in it for the 2nd year in a row which is not only great for our city and the legions of fans, but it puts a well deserved spotlight on the metro and just how amazing it actually is. But the roots (and more specifically the grass roots) of the BIG GAME don’t end at our team being in it because, in fact, Kansas City is home to the sports world’s most renowned turf expert that has made sure the fields are flawless for every championship game since the league’s inception as well as other national sports events around the globe. George Toma is a Kansas City legend as the head groundskeeper for both stadiums at the Truman Sports Complex making sure that our Kansas City hometown teams have perfect looking fields to play but he’s also been tasked as the head groundkeeper for every Super Bowl game since it began in 1967. While the game itself hasn’t changed much the preparation time and most notably the amount of money spent on the turf prep and sizes of the stadiums he works in most certainly has. With a just a few days to prepare the field in the early days of the BIG GAMES, today’s preparation takes months of planning and weeks of work to actually have the field ready for play. In fact the sod used in Tampa for the game this weekend has been growing for 18 months in Georgia and has now been installed in the stadium which is no simple task by any stretch of the imagination. Under the watchful eye of Kansas City’s own George Toma, we should expect to see nothing less than a stunning field on Sunday and hopefully at the end of the game another Kansas City victory.
