This summer at SK Lawn and Landscape, we’ve installed quite a few retaining walls and hardscaping projects in the Kansas City area. We are often asked by our customers “what do retaining walls do and how do they work?” so we thought we would use this blog post to provide some answers. Retaining walls are often both built for functionality but can also be an aesthetic landscaping element which we see more often than not at SK Lawn and Landscape.
Retaining Walls and Hardscaping in Kansas City, Overland Park, and Prairie Village
The functionality aspect of retaining walls typically involve drainage or saturation issues due to a landscapes natural irrigation path. A retaining wall can be used to stop soil erosion in a sloped area by channeling the water elsewhere where it would otherwise damage or destroy grass and other plants. Retaining walls can also be used to create patios, walkout basements or other hardscaping element that require level ground where the natural layout would normally slope. In most cases, retaining walls are constructed with concrete, bricks and/or stone depending on the function needed as obviously a solid concrete wall would be stronger and be able to help more weight than stacked stones or bricks.
Stone, brick, and/or pavers are mostly used when the retaining wall is being built for more aesthetic purposes than for functionality. When used in landscaping, retaining walls can be used as flower beds or planters and even for creating an ornamental area for statues, seating or other landscape accents. At SK Lawn and Landscape, we’ve built hundreds of retaining walls in the Kansas City area for both functionality, beauty, and sometimes a combination of both. If your lawn has a slope that is causing drainage issues when it rains or you’d like to remove a sloped area of your lawn to add hardscaping element, let experts at SK help you install a retaining wall that will last for years to come.
