It’s been a real roller coaster of a summer in the Kansas City area with unseasonably cool weeks that are uncharacteristic of late August weather and then blistering heat and humidity the next week which can be extremely hard on your lawn and landscaping.

At SK Lawn and Landscape, it’s hard for us not to notice that lawns are starting to look a bit scorched, plants are looking dry, and trees are having a tough time staying green and vibrant so we thought we’d provide some tips to get your landscaping through the summer heat.

Water Your Lawn and Plants Early in the Morning

Even though it may still be warm on summer mornings, the sun likely isn’t beating down which makes water evaporate quickly keeping it from reaching your lawn, plants, or trees. With the sun not nearly as powerful or even present in the early morning, water is able to reach deep into the soil where grass and plant roots can reach it.

Water Your Lawn and Plants ‘Deeply’

While watering frequently may seem to make sense, it can actually make plant roots grow shallow because the only soil that has any moisture is close to the surface. Watering less frequently and allowing the water to be absorbed deep into the soil with result in stronger roots that grow deep where water remains much longer than it would closer to the surface which heats up easier from the sun.

Mulch New Plants When Possible

While summer isn’t the ideal time to plant, some homeowners my opt to do so anyway and adding mulch around new plants will help them survive the heat. Mulch does 2 things for growing plants: 1) provides shade from the hot summer sun and 2) helps keep water from evaporating which new plants desperately need.
