They say that March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb but it seems quite the opposite this year in Kansas City and at SK Lawn and Landscape we’re already getting calls and emails from homeowners and business owners that want to get their lawn care and landscaping projects started and we are ready. One of the things we are asked about each spring is mulch and if we deliver and install it. The answer is yes but we’ve found that many new homeowners wonder why we recommend and use mulch. In this week’s blog we’ll briefly discuss why mulch is an important part of spring lawn and landscaping services and what it actually does.

What is mulch? Mulch can be defined as any organic or in some cases inorganic material that is placed on top of the soil in a landscaped area. There are a variety of different types of mulch materials but for our purposes we’ll focus more on bark which is what SK Lawn and Landscape uses for our customers. While many homeowners and business owners incorporate mulch into their landscaping simply for the aesthetics, it does have functionality especially during the early weeks of spring. In early spring, the air tends to be much cooler or in some cases dipping below freezing in the evenings and early mornings which can damage emerging plants and a good layer of mulch will provide a blanket of warmth for the soil. Mulch also helps soil retain moisture which is crucial especially for new plants that need it so badly to grow strong during the spring months. With the early spring months typically having abundant rains, mulch can also help prevent soil erosion while still allowing much needed moisture to reach the soil around newly planted flower, trees and plants.

Some mulches can also prevent weeds from growing and overtaking emerging plants as well as keeping insects and pests away which can feed on and destroy plants in the spring months. Finally, adding a layer of mulch around plants and landscaping can help maintain or add nutrients to the soil underneath which is particularly beneficial in the spring months for emerging plants. With the next few weeks looking like typical spring weather in the Kansas City area, we all know from previous years that March doesn’t always line up with the seasonal calendar so if you’re planning on planting flowers, trees, bushes or shrubs it’s best to make sure you have a round of mulch delivered and spread just in case we see more winter weather.
