Why Are Football Fields Still Green In The Winter?

We have less than a week to go before the Chiefs are back at Arrowhead for the playoffs and in the meantime their turf crews are likely busy making the field look its best before the big game. But how on earth do they keep the grass green in the middle of January? Well, it is no simple task and requires quite a bit of planning and some very clever technology to almost trick the grass into not knowing that it’s winter.

In the spring and summer months when the cold winds of winter begin to fade, the air begins to warm which also makes the ground temperatures warmer as well. With warmer ground and air temperatures combined with sunlight and adequate watering, grass essentially turns off its dormant, winter phase and begins to grow thick and green at its normal pace. At many outdoor sports stadiums (including Arrowhead), the soil is kept warm with an underground anti-freeze system of pipes that are pumped with hot water to accurately regulate soil temperature. This tricks the grass’ roots into growing even in the dead of winter but it still needs sunlight, fertilizing, watering and of course mowing because, unlike most lawns in the winter months, it’s actually still growing. The visible blades of grass don’t quite have the vibrant green that you would see in the late spring and summer months but it nevertheless looks better than most home lawns in the Kansas City area. According to the Chiefs official website, the soil warming system cost around 2 million dollars to install back in 2016 but has been very effective at keeping the field looking its best for postseason games that go well into January. While it isn’t practical for most homeowners to have a soil warming system to grow their lawn in the winter months, we at SK Lawn and Landscape find it fascinating that even in the dead of winter, the Chiefs and other sports stadiums are able to keep their turf growing. When spring does arrive, SK Lawn and Landscape would love to help provide you with quality, professional lawn care and landscaping services and while companies in our industries are shut down for the winter, we are open and happy to provide estimates.
