It shouldn’t be any surprise that winter is well on its way to the Kansas City area with some flakes already seen in some parts of the metro and freezing temperatures and frost on windows in the mornings. At SK Lawn and Landscape, our goal is to not only provide the Kansas City area’s most quality, professional lawn care and landscaping services but also to educate our customers especially in the winter months to keep their lawn and landscaped areas looking their best and ready to rebound in the spring.

One of the biggest misconceptions we at SK hear about caring for your lawn and landscape during the winter months is whether or not to continue watering when possible. The fact you should definitely continue to water your lawn and/or plants through the winter months when possible as they still need water even though they appear to lie dead and dormant. They are far from it and making sure that your lawn and plants have adequate water (so long as the ground isn’t frozen) will most certainly help them get through even the toughest winter but just make sure you don’t leave your hose connected to the faucet or you could be looking at some big problems when the temperatures drop below freezing. Another thing we see in our customers’ lawns is bald or dead spots once spring arrives but more specifically in areas that are close to driveways, sidewalks and patios and in most cases this is due to salt or ice melt that is commonly used when snow or ice on the ground in the winter months. Most ice melts are highly corrosive and not good for any type of plant and especially bad for anything trying to grow in soil that contains it so be conscious about keeping salt and ice melt from reaching your grass, trees, and other plants in the winter months.

One of the best things homeowners can do to protect their lawn, landscaping, and plants is to choose varieties that do well in the winter. While exotic trees, flowers, and warm weather grass may look great in the spring and summer months, they have little chance of any surviving a rough winter which the Kansas City area is due for sooner or later. The lawn care and landscaping experts are always happy to answer our customers’ questions about winter or any other season for that matter because our goal is to make sure that they have the best looking lawn and landscape on the block.
