How Your Lawn Survives The Winter

By now, most of the leaves has fallen off of the trees in the Kansas City area with the exception of a few stubborn ones and hopefully most lawns have had them removed before winter really sets in. Once the leaves are gone, it’s hard not to notice that the grass beneath is now brown and much less vibrant but it is far from dead but instead is preparing itself for winter. At SK Lawn and Landscape, we’re always fascinated with how nature knows just when to adapt to the changing of the seasons and your lawn’s grass makes one of the most interesting changed in late fall and early winter.

Just like any other plant, your lawn’s grass need several things in order to survive: water, sunlight, air, and nutrients from the soil all of which can be scarce in the winter months. While we tend to see quite a few freeze thaw cycles in the Kansas City which can provide water assuming that there is snow on the ground, sunlight is not as abundant in the winter as the days are shorter meaning your grass gets less and less sun especially if is covered in leaves or snow. Interestingly enough, grass and most all plants “know” when sunlight is lessening which is key to photosynthesis or the process they use to synthesize food from carbon dioxide and water. As the days get shorter in late fall and winter, your lawn’s grass will begin to enter into a dormant state outside the soil where it relies less on the environment around it and relies more so on the stored nutrients in the roots below the soil.

As spring arrives, the days become longer and rain is commonly in higher abundance and when combined with the cool air at night and warm sunny days, it’s a perfect recipe for waking up your lawn’s grass to become green and vibrant once again. The key to making sure that your lawn’s grass survives the winter and rebounds quickly in the spring is to make sure it has everything it needs before going dormant in the fall. The lawn care teams at SK Lawn and Landscape help make sure that lawn’s we work in are ready for whatever the Kansas City winter brings and we help gives lawns a boost in the spring so that they look their best when you use them most.
