In our ongoing blog series regarding landscaping principles, you may remember that last’s weeks post was about focal point in landscape design. This week we’ll be covering 2 separate landscaping principles: texture and color. The reason we are covering landscaping principles in one blog is quite simply because texture and color in landscape design are very closely related as you’ll see later.

Texture in Landscaping

When we think of the concept of texture, we tend to think of how a surface “feels” (smooth, coarse, rough, etc) but in the case of landscaping, it is more about the visual aspect of texture. For example a tree with large bark will contrast surrounding plants with smooth, consistently green leaves creating a noticeably visual contrast between the two. Using texture more often than not involves the careful selection of plants and thoughtful placement of them to either create a focal point in the landscaping or accent the central focal point of the landscape design. Texture in plants or trees can be used to create or even accentuate the balance and symmetry of landscape design and when properly executed can provide an aesthetically pleasing contrast by using varying textures that compliment each other. One of the most important keys to using texture effectively in landscaping relies heavily on making sure that it is visible from multiple vantage points.

Color in Landscaping

Choosing the right color scheme for your landscaping isn’t quite as easy as you’d think. In many cases, the homeowners we work with for landscape design and installation have an idea on the colors they’d like to see in their landscaping but our landscapers can help add to it. We can recommend plants and trees with colors that can match and also accent the exterior color of the their home, their favorite sports team(s), or just simply their favorite color(s). When planning which colors will be incorporated into a landscaping project, we like to remind our customers that many plants and trees are not always the same color all year long and we try to incorporate the varying seasonal colors into the overall landscape design plan. Whether the use of color is used as a focal point or to create a layered contrasting aesthetic, we make sure the plants and trees we recommend will live up our customers expectations and provide years of natural beauty and color to their lawn and landscape.
