What Is Lawn Fungus?

Lawn fungus can be white, yellow, or brown patches that grow in a circular shape.

Sometimes getting your lawn’s grass to grow thick, green, and consistent isn’t as easy as spreading some seed and watering regularly. In fact there are many other factors that can hinder grass growth and particularly in the summer months we at SK Lawn and Landscape tend to see a lot of lawn fungus (or lawn disease) at the onset of summer. Both lawn fungus and grubs (which we’ll discuss in next week’s blog) can damage your lawn and cause what appears to be dead areas of grass but there are solutions for getting rid of it and SK’s lawn care teams know exactly what to do.

Lawn fungus can occur due to a variety of reasons or a combination of them. In most cases, lawn fungus is caused by mowing grass too short, extreme drought, soil being compacted, too much watering, over use of fertilizer, and/or hot/humid weather. Lawn fungus can be spotted by white, yellow or brown rings that grow in somewhat of a circular fashion and in some cases it can leave a slimy coating on your grass. There are many ways to get rid of lawn fungus including the use of chemicals but as a rule of thumb it’s best to just practice good, consistent lawn care techniques which will usually take care of the problem. Making sure your lawn gets on one inch of water per week either with rain or through a sprinkler system and routine mowing at an appropriate height are first and foremost the easiest things that can be done.

If there is a layer of thatch or dead grass blades that are keeping the soil from getting fresh air, it will need to be removed as lawn fungus tends to thrive in moist, static and still environments. Aerating which loosens up the soil each year can also help prevent fungus as it typically grows more rapidly on compacted soil. If all else fails, a soil test can be done to determine which nutrients are lacking in your lawn that may help promote lawn fungus growth. If you suspect that your lawn may have fungus or any other issues let the lawn care experts at SK come take a look because we’ve seen it in Kansas City and will know exactly what to do.
