It’s Mulch Madness Time Again!

When it’s March in Kansas City, it’s MULCH MADNESS time at SK Lawn and Landscape! It is always a sure sign that spring is on the way, we recently had multiple tons of mulch delivered to our offices, and our lawn care and landscape maintenance teams are already out and about around the metro laying it down in our customers’ lawns. But you may wonder what exactly is mulch and what does it do? Well, in this week’s post, we’ll answer those questions and, more specifically, why you should have us deliver and spread mulch to your lawn and landscaped areas.

Lawn Care and Landscape Maintenance in Kansas City, MO

Mulch is primarily made up of what can be described as shredded tree bark, wood chips, and other organic materials. While there are some instances where compost, tires (rubber), leaves, or grass can be deemed as mulch, for lawn and landscaping purposes, tree bark and wood chips are more ideal for functionality. What mulch actually does for your lawn and landscaped areas are a variety of things. First and most noticeably, a fresh round of mulch often spruces up the look of a lawn. Mulch tends to fade and turn a greyish brown over the course of the year, particularly here in the Kansas City area, which is why many homeowners opt to have a fresh round applied in the spring months. In terms of functionality, a new layer of mulch can provide much-needed nutrients to lacking soil which is advantageous for emerging and existing plants, trees, and flowers in the spring months. Mulch also helps retain beneficial soil moisture, particularly in the Kansas City area when rain has been scarce. In early spring, when temperatures tend to bounce up and down, a good layer of mulch can regulate the temperature of the soil. However, it does have its limitations, especially when you consider that it can be 80 degrees one day and below freezing the next. Heavy spring rains can also cause soil erosion, but mulch can help prevent that from happening on your lawn.

But most importantly, in early spring, when weeds begin to germinate, mulch can suppress their growth in plant and flower beds which adds to not only the overall health of a lawn and landscaping but also the ornamental aesthetics of them. With many uses for mulch, now is the ideal time to have it on your plant beds, and SK Lawn and Landscape’s lawn care and landscaping teams can have it delivered and spread professionally.
